Do I have to do anything on a daily basis?

No. Once you have downloaded and installed the agent, there's nothing that you have to do. The agent will run on your device whenever it determines that there is unused processor capacity available. When it finishes with a calculation, it will send the completed work to the grid server and then ask the grid server for more work.

I have the same device listed more than once on my device list. Why is that?

When a device first contacts the server, the server creates a database record for the device. This record stores details like Operating System, available memory and how many times the device has communicated with the server. Each time the device communicates with the server, it compares various details about the device with its record on the server in an attempt to identify if it is the same device contacting the server. If anything appears different, the system will create a new record for the device and treat it as a new device. This prevents issues that can arise in different installation scenarious (such as in computer labs where each computer is setup identically and gets an identical installation image). Sometimes this leads to multiple entries for the same device in the website device list, but it ensures the proper functioning of the overall system.

In situations where a new device listing is created, the previous device listing will no longer act as a contributing device (even though it is showing up in your device list). The Device Manager page and the Device Statistics page shows, by default, all of your devices that were registered within the past 7 days or that have returned a result within the past 14 days. Unused devices do not appear on this page when these time periods have passed.

How do I keep from getting H1N1 influenza?

There is no guaranteed way to avoid getting influenza. However, the following CDC guidelines of everyday actions could help you stay healthy:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Does World Community Grid offer a 64 bit version of the BOINC software?

No. Our recommended BOINC agents are those of the 32 bit variety because even though the client is 32 bit, it will run 64 bit applications. The agent does not do anything that requires 64 bit execution at this time, thus recommending a version that works on both makes life easier. The science applications are available in both 32 bit and 64 bit. A 64 bit science application can run on 32 bit BOINC client. The opposite is also true, a 32 bit science application can run on a 64 bit BOINC client.

I have installed the recommend version of the BOINC client for Linux, but I cannot get it to run. What should I do?

Which version of the Linux client you should use depends highly on the libraries that you have installed on your machine. The recommended version is what you should try first. However, if this does not work, then you should try one of the 'compatible' builds. You may find these here. The compatible builds are command line only.

Do I have to leave my device on all the time for this to work? Or always be online?

The software can run only when your device is on. The software doesn't need to be connected to the Internet to work its task, but once finished, it needs to reconnect to return data and to get a new task to work on. We do not ask our members to change their normal habits and schedule for using the device. The software will adapt to your usage patterns and only utilize the device's processing power when you don't otherwise need it.

Display similar help items

I changed the schedule on the Device Profiles page but it does not seem to work?

This schedule change affects the grid agent running on your computer. For security reasons, no information is pushed to the grid agent while it is running on your computer. Only when your grid agent communicates with the grid servers does anything change with the grid agent. When your grid agent finishes its current unit of work, it will initiate communications with the grid server, and then your new schedule will take effect.

To update your preferences immediately, double click on the World Community Grid, or BOINC icon, in your system tray and select Advanced View. Then select the “projects” tab and click on World Community Grid. From the left hand menu, select “update”. This will retrieve your preferences. Please note: Local preferences set at your computer will override preference settings on the website.

How do I set up my system so that the windows agent starts for several or all of the users that log in?

You can place the World Community Grid icon into each of the user's startup folders (in Start Menu->Programs->Startup), which will make the agent start whenever those particular users log on. You can also place it in the startup folder for "All users" which should make it run for everyone. One way to get to these folders is via: My Computer -> Local disk C: -> Documents and Settings -> All Users -> Start Menu -> Programs -> Startup, for example.

Why do I get the error: exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) (On Windows Vista)?

The message exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) means that when you log off of Windows the application gets terminated quite abruptly. Vista can shut down very quickly and not allow BOINC enough time to stop properly. This problem was corrected in the 5.10.45 version of BOINC. Please ensure that you are running the latest recommended version of the World Community Grid software.

To determine what version you are currently running on your computer, right click on the World Community Grid, or BOINC, icon in the bottom right corner of your display (by the date and time). Click on “About World Community Grid – BOINC Client” or “About BOINC” and the current version of the software will be displayed.

You may check if you have the latest supported version of the World Community Grid software by visiting this page: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewDownloadAgain.do . The version number is displayed below the name of the agent for each operating system. If this number is the same as the version number that you have installed then you have the latest supported version.

The software keeps writing "Deferring communication with project for W days, X hours, Y minutes, and Z seconds". What does this mean and how do I get it to connect now?

This message appears when the software has experienced a problem connecting to the server. This may be because of some problem on your local device or because World Community Grid's servers are temporarily unavailable due to maintenance or updates.

The software will delay the attempt to reconnect because during the time that the servers are unavailable, more and more volunteers' devices will try to connect to the servers. Once the servers became available the servers could become overwhelmed if all of the local devices attempted to contact them at once. This delay mechanism reduces the chances of the servers being overwhelmed.

How do I set up my device so that it will download enough work to keep my device working for several days?

You may set up the BOINC agent so that it will keep a cache of work units to keep your device busy. You can do this on the website by going to your Settings page, and then selecting Device Manager. This screen will show you a list of your active devices. Associated with each device is a device profile. Click on the device profile associated with the device you want to cache additional work units on. On the Device Profile screen select 'Custom Profile' and then find the field labeled 'Work Unit Cache Settings', change the fields to meet your requirements and save the profile. Please do not use values longer then 4 days, as the scheduling algorithm in the client may prevent you from getting as much work as you would like.

I get "Cannot Connect to Server" messages when logging in. What's wrong?

First ensure that you have internet connection to other sites. There are several scenarios which may cause this error:

  • This error could be due to a physical disconnection between your machine and the Internet, whether at your machine or your ISP.
  • Alternatively, our server could be temporarily down for maintenance. We try to restrict our maintenance to non-peak hours in the US, which may be inconvenient for folks on other continents. From time-to-time, it is necessary to take the servers offline outside our scheduled maintenance periods. We apologize if this causes any inconvenience. We will endeavor to keep the service available at all times.
  • This may occur on some machines that do not recognize the network when they are first launched. Exiting and restarting the World Community Grid Software clears this up, and users are able to connect without error.
  • If you are using a proxy server, a personal or corporate firewall, or an Internet gateway router, be sure to configure your settings before logging in.

How do I configure my settings so that World Community Grid uses my device's GPU?

By default, World Community Grid will not use your device's GPUs. To allow World Community Grid to use your GPUs:

  • Go to Device Profiles and select the relevant profile. (If you're not sure which profile relates to the device on which you want to run GPU work, refer to your Device Manager list).
  • Ensure that the selected device profile is a Custom Profile.
  • Scroll through the Advanced Options to the 'Graphics Card Usage' section.
  • In order to get GPU work, select "Yes" for the type of GPU card (AMD/ATI, Intel or NVIDIA) you wish World Community Grid to use. You can set all three types (AMD/ATI, Intel, NVIDIA) as "Yes" if you do not know what card you have or wish to run GPU work on all cards available in a computer.

Another option is "Do work on my graphics card while computer is in use?". This is an advanced option and is set to "No" by default, as in some cases choosing "Yes" can cause the device performance to appear sluggish while the GPU is used for mouse movements and other system operations.

I entered in my proxy information but I still cannot get work. How do I get it to work?

If after you enter your proxy information and you still see messages such as those displayed in the FAQ "How do I determine why I cannot connect to the World Community Grid servers?" above and you have checked and made sure that you are on the latest version of the World Community Grid software, then you will need to take the following additional steps:

You need to determine what type of proxy authentication you are using. To determine your proxy authentication please refer to this FAQ.

Once you have determined your proxy authentication, open windows explorer and go to C:\Program Files\BOINC. In this directory you will see a file called cc_config.xml. Assuming you are using windows, right mouse click on the this file and select 'Open With' and select 'Notepad'.

This will open a new window that will be populated with the contents of your cc_config.xml file. It will look something like the following:

<cc_config>
 <log_flags>
  <file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
  <http_debug>1</http_debug>
  <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
  <proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug>
 </log_flags>
</cc_config>

You want to replace this with additional settings for your 'ntlm' or 'basic' proxy.

<cc_config>
 <log_flags>
  <file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
  <http_debug>1</http_debug>
  <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
  <proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug>
 </log_flags>
 <options>
  <force_auth>xxxxx</force_auth>
 </options>
</cc_config>

Replace the above 'xxxxx' with either ntlm, basic or gss-negotiate based on what type of authentication you are using and save the file.

In order to make the software re-read the file do the following:

    Double click on the World Community Grid icon in the system tray
    When it opens, if you see some text that says 'Advanced View', then click on it
    From the options on the top of the screen select 'Advanced' -> 'Read config files'

Finally, in order to check that you are able to download work, please do the following:

    Select the 'projects' tab
    Select World Community Grid from the list
    Click on the 'Update' button.
    Go to the messages tab

If all is working correctly, then you will see that you are downloading work and you will start processing it. If this has not helped you, then you can seek further help in the forums or by contacting us through the contact us feature on our website.

What was the difference between run time reported by the United Devices version and the BOINC version?

It is important to note, that the time reported to the server doesn't mean that the UD version was doing more work then the BOINC version. The UD version simply overcounted the actual time that was contributed to the project. In fact, the BOINC version actually contributes more time to the project because it is able to take advantage of multi-core processors or multi-processory systems. The UD version could only use one core or processor. The BOINC version will start up a science application on each core or processor and thus be able to get two or more times the work done.

How does World Community Grid get new projects?

First, a non-profit organization has to have a research project which benefits humanity for which they require some serious computer power in order to complete the research. Then someone from the research organization goes to the World Community Grid website and Submits a Proposal. At World Community Grid, we review the proposal to ensure it meets all requirements and is technically feasible to run on the grid. Then subject matter experts review the proposal to ensure that the research is technically correct. After that, it is placed on the schedule for launch.

Why are gene comparisons important?

Because of recent advances in DNA sequencing technology, there is now a huge amount of gene information available for a wide variety of organisms, with more being decoded every day. Many of these organisms, particularly microorganisms, have never been studied in detail before. We therefore know little about what they can do, and how they interact with their environment. However, it is likely that many genes from unknown organisms will be similar to genes from organisms that we know more about. When similarities are found, researchers get a head start in understanding previously unknown organisms.

I have a platform that isn't supported by World Community Grid. Could I get a copy of the research application code and compile it myself?

No. The code has to remain in the control of the World Community Grid support team. Even the slightest change in the code, including using a different compiler, could render the research results useless. In addition, the license agreement that we have with the researchers for their code stipulate that only the World Community Grid support team can touch the source code. The source code usually differs slightly from potential public versions of the same code due to changes made for use with the specific grid project. Furthermore, we typically run many tests to make certain there are no problems on a given platform.

How is malaria transmitted?

Malaria infections are transmitted to humans by certain types of mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes from the genus Anopheles are the specific kinds of mosquitoes that are responsible for hosting and then spreading malaria infections. Since male mosquitoes eat plant nectar instead of blood, only the females transmit malaria infections. Female mosquitoes become infected with the malaria parasite when they drink the blood of a human who has a malaria infection. After being ingested by a mosquito, the parasite progresses through specific stages of its life cycle that can only occur when it is inside a mosquito (see the FAQ below on the parasite’s life cycle). When that infected female mosquito then feeds on a different person, its saliva contains the malaria parasite, which gets injected into the person’s skin.

In very rare cases, blood transfusions can also transmit malaria infections, but female mosquitoes are the main culprit.

What is the life cycle for the malaria parasite?

When an infected female mosquito bites someone’s skin, the Plasmodium parasite is injected. The parasite quickly invades liver cells (within a matter of minutes after it was injected). The parasite hides in the liver cells, where it undergoes asexual multiplication. This stage in the liver tends to last for eight to thirty days, during which the symptoms of malaria do not yet appear. The parasites escape the liver by rupturing the infected cells. The parasites then invade red blood cells, where they continue to undergo asexual multiplication. When these malaria parasites replicate themselves in red blood cells (which the parasites use for food and then burst), the symptoms of malaria appear (see the FAQ above on the symptoms of malaria). If another mosquito then feeds on that infected person’s blood, that mosquito becomes infected. Plasmodium parasites can only sexually reproduce when they are inside a mosquito.

How do these docking programs work?

AutoDock is a suite of automated docking tools designed to predict how “small molecule compounds,” such as substrates or drug candidates, bind to a receptor (target) of known 3-D structure and to estimate how tightly that small molecule binds to that receptor. That is, it predicts both the small molecules “binding mode” and estimates its potency against the target. The AutoDock algorithm is essentially a high dimensional stochastic search utilizing a “Lamarckian genetic algorithm” approach with flexible models of the small molecules. When docking any given drug candidate against a particular protein target, the space of all possible configurations must be explored to find the best energetic fit between the two molecules. Any given docking protocol must explore all possible degrees of freedom that are specified in the system. AutoDock consists of two main programs: autodock performs the docking of each compound against a set of grid maps that describe the energetic landscape of the target protein, and autogrid pre-calculates these grid maps before autodock is run, which greatly increases the speed of the autodock phase of these calculations.

AutoDock Vina also uses pre-calculated grid maps (which are generated internally, instead of using a separate program, such as autogrid). Vina also uses flexible models of the small molecules, and it also treats the docking process as a stochastic global optimization of the scoring function. But Vina utilizes a different scoring function and a different search algorithm than AutoDock, and Vina’s search process is guided by the gradients in the energetic landscape of the target protein (unlike AutoDock4.2).
